چکیده
We first consider three well-known chain conditions in the space of marked groups: the minimal condition on centralizers, the maximal condition on subgroups, and the maximal condition on normal subgroups. For each condition, we produce a characterization in terms of well-founded descriptiveset-theoretic trees. Using these characterizations, we demonstrate that the sets given by these conditions are co-analytic and not Borel in the space of marked groups. We then adapt our techniques to show elementary amenable marked groups may be characterized by well-founded descriptive-set-theoretic trees, and therefore, elementary amenability is equivalent to a chain condition. Our characterization again implies the set of elementary amenable groups is co-analytic and non-Borel. As corollary, we obtain a new, non-constructive, proof of the existence of finitely generated amenable groups that are not elementary amenable.

In recent years, much work in descriptive set theory has been focused on the Borel complexity of naturally occurring classification problems, in particular, the study of countable Borel equivalence relations and their structure under the quasi-order of Borel reducibility. Following the approach of Louveau and Rosendal for the study of analytic equivalence relations, we study countable Borel qua...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Classification Problems in Ergodic Theory
The last two decades have seen the emergence of a theory of set theoretic complexity of classification problems in mathematics. In these lectures we will discuss recent developments concerning the application of this theory to classification problems in ergodic theory. The first lecture will be devoted to a general introduction to this area. The next two lectures will give the basics of Hjorth'...
متن کاملResearch Proposal: Borel Equivalence Relations
The study of definable equivalence relations on complete separable metric spaces (i.e., Polish spaces) has emerged as a new direction of research in descriptive set theory over the past twenty years. Quotients of such equivalence relations include the orbit space of an ergodic group action, the set of Turing degrees of subsets of natural numbers, and the space of isomorphism classes of countabl...
متن کاملPolish Group Actions: Dichotomies and Generalized Elementary Embeddings
The results in this paper involve two different topics in the descriptive theory of Polish group actions. The book Becker-Kechris [6] is an introduction to that theory. Our two topics—and two collections of theorems—are rather unrelated, but the proofs for both topics are essentially the same. Locally compact Polish groups, i.e., second countable locally compact groups, are the traditional obje...
